Course abstract
The value of cross-cultural research hinges on the equivalence of translated/adapted measurement instruments (here: questionnaires). Hence, researchers need to pay particular attention when translating/adapting a questionnaire from one language into another. This workshop starts (a) with the premises of good questionnaire translation, notably translatability of source instruments and translation-relevant information on constructs and items. We will then (b) present state-of-the-art translation methodology (the team approach TRAPD, with its process, team composition, and variants of implementation) as well as current methodological debates and developments in the field. Ultimately, we will introduce the various dimensions (meaning, cultural adequacy, style, consistency, etc.) that should be considered when producing a translation from the practical point of view. In this short course, we will focus on the linguistic aspects of questionnaire translation/adaptation and the translation process itself; we will not cover psychometric validation.
